FAQ

What should I do if my child is unable to attend a session?

Either you or your child should notify us in advance by contacting ututors@utoronto.ca.

What technology does my child need to participate in the program?

The UTutors program will be hosted over Zoom. Ideally, the child should be working in a quiet environment with high-speed internet. There is no need to download the Zoom application. The web version should suffice.

Is there a minimal commitment time my child and I have to make in order to sign-up for this program?

No. We are very flexible to accommodate with your schedule and your child’s needs. We recommend starting with 1 or 2 hours of tutoring sessions each week. Depending on the progress made during the tutoring sessions, you and the UTutors can adjust tutoring sessions accordingly. If you would no longer like to participate, you can choose to stop participating at any time.

Can I sit-in my child’s tutoring sessions?

Yes! If you would like to listen-in to see how the tutoring session goes, you are welcome to sit-in. All tutors hired have completed their police checks and are students of the University of Toronto Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). The administrative side will make sure that students are paired with a same-sex tutor to help parents feel more at ease with the one-on-one tutoring.

What information will be collected if my child does participate in the tutoring sessions?

For safety and quality assurance, all sessions will be recorded. Only UTutors administrators and researchers of the UTutors program will have access to these recordings. These recordings will be used for quality assurance and anonymous research. They are stored on a password secure OneDrive folder and will be deleted within 365 days. The student’s Khan Academy assignment progress will be the primary information collected. Researchers will compare assignment performance before and after participation of the program, examine attendance patterns, and survey tutors to assess overall experiences and impressions. All data collected will be used anonymously and aggregated. No individual would be identified.
